On Parade Day, parking is free at the parking lots adjacent to the Eisenhower Avenue Metro Station.
Free DASH shuttle bus service will take you downtown and back from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

George Washington Comes to Dinner at Carlyle House

THIS EVENT WILL NOT TAKE PLACE THIS YEAR.

 

“Walking With Washington” tours

Description: Walking tours of Alexandria sites associated with George Washington.

Dates: Every February Sunday! February 1, 8, 15, & 22; 2009.  Time: 1:30 p.m.

Location: Meet at the fountain at Market Square (King & Royal Sts.), Alexandria.

Ticket Price: Free! Reservations are not required.

The Cherry Challenge

Description: Enjoy and vote for your favorite cherry-inspired culinary creation in George Washington’s home town! Each participating restaurant will create a unique menu item featuring cherries. Each patron who orders the item will have the opportunity to rate it by submitting a ballot. The winning restaurant will be in the George Washington Birthday Parade, receive a plaque, and other recognition (including a feature in Washingtonian Magazine).

Dates: February 1 through 8, 2009

Participating Restaurants: Bastille, Bookbinder’s, Finn and Porter, Layla’s, Murphy’s Irish Pub, St. Elmo’s Coffee Pub, Stardust, Tempo, and Union Street Public House. Contact the restaurant directly for details about their creation(s).

 

George Washington Classic 10K Race (and 2K Fun Run)

Location The first race of the season! Prizes, t- shirts & refreshments. Benefits Alexandria Police Youth Camp. Pre-race packet pick-up is available.

Date: Saturday, February 14, 2009  Time: 8:30 a.m. Rain or shine.

Registration Fee For Runners: $30 (Late registration after 1/15/09 is $35);
“2K Fun Run” is $10 (family pricing is available for the 2K Race)

Birthnight Banquet & Ball

Description: You will be part of a reenactment of the ball held In George Washington's honor at Gadsby's in 1797! Colonial attire is not required! 18th-century dancing lessons are available prior to the Ball (for an additional fee).

Date: Saturday, February 14, 2009  Time: 5:30 p.m.

Location: Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, 134 N. Royal St., Alexandria.

Ticket Price:  $100 for banquet & ball, $50 for ball only (begins at 9). Advance reservations required; and we suggest making an early reservation.

Revolutionary War Reenactment at Fort Ward Park

Description:  Historic camp and tactical demonstrations throughout the day including a Revolutionary War skirmish between the Redcoats and the Colonial Army.

Date: Sunday, February 15, 2009  Time: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (skirmish is at 2 p.m.)

Worship at Historic Christ Church (Espiscopal)

Description:  Washington was a member of this church. We honor the first President during services by reading the prayer he composed, laying a wreath in his memory, and displaying the Washington Family Bible.

George Washington Memorial Award Presentation

Description: "This annual Award is presented to individuals who have promoted the virtues, character and vision of George Washington"

The award will be followed by a Reception featuring musical entertainment, Birthday Cake and Appropriate Toasts.

The 2009 Recipient is General Dave R. Palmer, author of, "George Washington and Benedict Arnold: At Tale of Two Patriots" and "1794 America, Its Army, and the Birth of the Nation"

General Palmer will speak on "George Washington and the formative years of the United States Army."

George Washington Symposium

Description: "The Military Education of George Washington" will be the focus of this year's program.

Presenters will be Professor Edward G. Lengel, an Associate Professor at the University of Virginia, speaking on "George Washington and the French and Indian Wars." and

Historian Glenn F. William, of the National Museum of the U. s. Army speaking on "George Washington and the War for Independence."

Ticket Price: $25. (luncheon included). Scholarships are available for students.

Music for Washington’s Birthday

Description: Join David Hildebrand from the Colonial Music Institute as he honors our first President with a musical performance and lecture on period music that was popular with George Washington and other founding fathers. The Father of our Country himself will be there, too, chatting with audience members over a glass of Madeira before the show begins! There will be two performances.

“The largest Parade Celebrating Washington’s Birthday in the USA!
Time: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Parade Route:  Start point is on South Saint Asaph Street at Wilkes Street; parade goes North on Saint Asaph Street to Queen Street, East on Queen Street to Royal Street, South on Royal Street to King Street, East on King Street to Fairfax Street, and South on Fairfax Street to the End Point on Fairfax Street at Gibbon Street.
Reviewing Stand is on the West side of Royal Street at Cameron Street
Access for Handicapped is across from the Reviewing Stand on the East side of Royal Street at Cameron Street; parking on Cameron between N. Royal & N. Fairfax Streets.
